About The Role And Team

As a Social Worker at Mount Gambier Prison, you'll be a vital part of a dedicated team that supports the wellbeing and rehabilitation of offenders. You'll be part of a supportive team with four other Social Workers, reporting to our Resettlement and Reintegration Manager, Allan. The role is varied and includes conducting risk assessments, delivering rehabilitation programs, and assisting with pre-release planning. You'll also work closely with a Case Management Coordinator, a correctional case management specialist, to provide comprehensive support to a specific group of prisoners.

Your Responsibilities Will Include

Admission support: Conduct in-depth risk assessments of new prisoners, including those with mental health concerns or who may have recently been under the influence.Support for female prisoners: Provide counselling and assessments to female prisoners shortly after their arrival.Program facilitation: You will occasionally co-facilitate the "Making Changes" rehabilitation program with another staff member, working with groups of 10-12 prisoners. This program runs twice a year for 12 weeks and involves a mix of classroom-based activities and group work, totalling 10 hours per week over the 12-week period.Case management: Collaborate with our Case Management Coordinators and contribute to case reviews, annual reports, and the development of individualised case plans.Pre-release support: Assist prisoners with pre-release planning, including housing applications and connecting them with support services like employment agencies.Inbound Phone Calls: Social workers will also be rostered daily to take calls from members of the public who phone in with concerns about prisoners.

What We're Looking For

Completion of a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work.Eligibility for registration with the Australian Association of Social Workers.Holder of a current driver's licence or probationary licence.Confidence and assertiveness to advocate for prisoner needs and effectively collaborate with colleagues.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
