To deliver high-quality sailing instruction across Royal Geelong Yacht Club (RGYC) Sailing Academy programs, in line with Australian Sailing (AS) standards and the Club’s values. Programs include Tackers, OutThere Sailing, Dinghy, Keelboat and Powerboat courses, school programs, and Discover Sailing activities.
The role contributes to growing participation, developing sailors, and ensuring a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable environment for all participants.
Reporting Structure
Reports To: Sailing and Boating Manager
Key Working Relationships:
Internal - Sailing Coordinator, Sailing Administrator, Head Coach.
External - Australian Sailing, parents/guardians, schools, and community groups.
Employment Conditions
Type: Casual employment.
Hours: Flexible, with a strong requirement for weekends, after-school, and school holiday availability.
Remuneration: Casual hourly rate in line with industry award, paid fortnightly.
Entitlements: Statutory superannuation contributions.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver engaging, safe, and structured sessions according to Australian Sailing course manuals and RGYC program plans.
- Ensure compliance with Australian Sailing Operating Standards and Safety Guidelines, and all statutory child safety requirements.
- Promote progression within the RGYC Sailing Academy pathway and encourage ongoing club membership.
- Prepare and rig boats and equipment prior to each session; de-rig, clean, and store appropriately after use.
- Maintain accurate records, including attendance, incident reports, and equipment issues.
- Support the ongoing care and maintenance of RGYC vessels and training equipment.
Daily Tasks
- Wear approved RGYC Instructor uniform when on duty.
- Deliver sessions following lesson plans and approved safety procedures.
- Implement emergency and risk management procedures where necessary.
- Actively supervise participants on and off the water, maintaining high safety standards.
- Report hazards, incidents, or near misses to the Sailing Coordinator / Manager.
Performance Indicators
- Participant retention and progression through RGYC pathways.
- Participant and parent/guardian satisfaction (surveys and feedback).
- Compliance with safety standards and incident-free delivery.
- Positive contribution to the reputation and culture of RGYC.
Skills and Experience
- Demonstrated dinghy and/or keelboat sailing and powerboating experience.
- Racing experience desirable.
- Strong communication and group management skills, with the ability to engage children and adults.
- Punctual, organised, and reliable with a positive, enthusiastic attitude.
Qualifications (Essential)
- Current Australian Sailing Instructor Qualification (Dinghy, Keelboat, or Powerboat)
- Or: Assistant qualification with pathway to Instructor
- Australian Sailing Powerboat Handling Certificate
- Victorian Marine Licence
- First Aid Certificate (HLTAID011 or higher)
- Working with Children Check (Victoria)
- Current CPR Certificate (HLTAID009)
