Position Summary
This position is responsible for teaching students in an assigned field of study using a diverse set of instruction methods and tools. The position develops curriculum, prepares teaching materials, provides assessments of students’ progress. It ensures the proper stewardship of college facilities, equipment and other inventories. The position is also responsible for upholding the College’s policies and procedures and for participating in meetings and events and on committees.
Duties & Responsibilities
Teaches students using a diverse and systematic plan of lectures, presentations, demonstrations, discussion groups, laboratory work, shop sessions, seminars, case studies, field assignments and independent or group projects.Develops curriculum and prepares teaching materials and outlines for courses including audio visual and web-related materials where appropriate.Prepares, administers and marks papers, tests, exams and other assessments to monitor and evaluate students’ progress. Provides detailed feedback on student performance.Assists and provides support to students and potential students by advising on program curricula and career decisions.Provides individualized or group tutorial or remedial instruction to students who require it.Maintains effective stewardship of classroom facilities, equipment, materials, software and tools.Arranges for and supervises independent or group projects, field placements, laboratory work or hands-on training.Adheres to VCC policies and procedures including being available to students and maintaining confidentiality of student information.Participates in departmental and college meetings and events. Consults with other College departments and may serve on committees concerning matters such as budgets, curriculum revision, and course and certificate or diploma requirements.Performs other related duties as required.
Area Hiring Criteria
One of the following:Bachelor of Education with valid Teaching Certificate from a Canadian province/territory orBachelor’s degree and Provincial Instructors Diploma.Group-based and self-paced experience teaching adults.Experience teaching fundamental-level literacy skills (reading and writing from beginning to Grade 9 levels) within the past five years.Experience teaching fundamental-level numeracy skills (Mathematics from beginning to Grade 9 levels) within the past five years.Experience cultivating a learning environment that is welcoming and relevant to Indigenous adult learners and that helps prepare non-Indigenous students to better understand, live alongside of, and work with Indigenous peoples.Experience teaching computer literacy skills to adult beginners requiring a high degree of patience.Experience using a variety of teaching and assessment methods to accommodate the needs of adult learners who face multiple barriers to learning.Proficiency communicating in an empathetic and supportive way with a diverse range of adult learners.Commitment to collegiality, collaborative decision-making, and active participation. in the effective operation of the department.In addition to the required credentials and experience listed above, we would value the following:Credentials in Adult Literacy, Special Education, Adult Education;Experience teaching Adult Literacy Fundamental English and Math. Salary Range - Prorated based on FTE $70.43/hour
