S. McCarthy Construction is a well-established construction company operating across the Northern Territory, delivering a diverse range of remote building, civil, and infrastructure projects for government, commercial, and community clients.

Due to continued growth, we are seeking a qualified Carpenter to support construction, maintenance, and project delivery across urban, regional, and remote NT locations. This role involves remote work across the Territory, including FIFO, DIDO, or project-based travel arrangements, depending on project requirements.

Reporting to the Construction or Project Manager, you will work across project builds, civil support works, and maintenance activities, contributing to high-quality outcomes in challenging and rewarding environments.

This role will suit a hands-on, adaptable Carpenter with experience across general building, property maintenance, and construction projects, who is comfortable working in remote locations and across multidisciplinary teams.

 

 

Role & Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, specifications, and sketches to fully understand project requirements

  • Take accurate measurements and calculate materials and quantities required for works

  • Cut, shape, and finish timber and other materials (e.g. steel framing, composites, fiberglass)

  • Construct, install, and repair: 

    • Structural frames

    • Windows and doors

    • Flooring, roofing, and wall systems

    • Building fit-outs and finishing works

  • Undertake general building and maintenance works across residential, commercial, and community assets

  • Support remote project builds and civil construction activities, including site establishment works

  • Assist with formwork, concrete preparation, and other civil-related carpentry tasks as required

  • Inspect completed works and undertake repairs and maintenance where necessary

  • Provide input into scoping works and preparing basic repair or maintenance quotes when requested

  • Erect and dismantle scaffolding and temporary construction structures

  • Report all serious incidents immediately to the Site or Project Manager

  • Record accidents and incidents using Company WHS procedures and documentation

  • Maintain tools, equipment, and materials in safe working condition and maintain an asset register

  • Ensure company vehicles are maintained, clean, and checked weekly (oils, water, tyres etc.), reporting any issues to the Safety Officer

  • Work collaboratively across multiple trades and multi-skill as required

  • Perform other duties as directed by the Construction or Project Manager

Required Skills & Knowledge

  • Current Australian Driver’s Licence (HR or higher desirable)

  • Trade qualified Carpenter (Cert III in Carpentry or equivalent)

  • Minimum 1 year post-trade experience 

    • OR 3 years practical experience (may substitute formal qualification)

  • Proven experience in: 

    • Carpentry and general construction

    • Building maintenance and repairs

    • Remote or regional project environments (highly regarded)

  • Strong understanding of construction methods, carpentry techniques, and installations

  • Proficient in the safe use of electrical and hand tools and measuring equipment

  • Ability to read and understand technical drawings and specifications

  • Commitment to WHS requirements and safe work practices at all times

  • Good literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving skills

  • Good physical condition suited to remote and manual work

  • Demonstrated work ethic, adaptability, and ability to resolve onsite challenges

  • Experience working within Aboriginal communities or remote communities (desirable, not essential)
