About the role:

The Safety, Wellbeing and Injury Management Coordinator plays a key role in ensuring Wuchopperen provides a safe, healthy and culturally responsive environment for all employees, clients and visitors.

The role leads the development and delivery of Work Health and Safety systems, supports leaders to manage physical and psychosocial risks, and drives a strong safety culture aligned with Wuchopperen values.

Working collaboratively across the organisation, the Coordinator provides expert guidance on Work Health & Safety compliance, risk management, injury management, safety and wellbeing initiatives, ensuring Wuchopperen meets its obligations and continuously improves safety outcomes.

The role reports to the Manager, Human Resources and works collaboratively with HR, Quality & Compliance, Facilities, and leaders across the organisation. It also engages regularly with health professionals, service providers and other external stakeholders.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead the development, implementation and ongoing management of a comprehensive Safety Wellbeing and Injury Management Framework.
  • Provide high level, evidence-based Work Health and Safety advice to the Executive Leadership Committee, management, and staff.
  • Lead and promote effective health safety and wellbeing projects and initiatives, including mental health and wellbeing awareness programs.
  • Work closely with the Senior Leadership Team and program areas to:
  • Identify Workplace Health and Safety needs, issues and barriers.
  • Provide practical advice and coaching to staff and leaders.
  • Strengthen understanding of legislative obligations; and
  • Ensure staff and leaders have sufficient tools and resources to effectively manage physical and psychosocial risks.
  • Foster strong communication, collaboration and engagement to maintain a positive and sustainable safety culture
  • Develop, implement and review the audit schedule, and maintain legislatively compliant policies, procedures, systems, and practices.
  • Lead risk-based identification, incident investigations, hazard reporting and recommend corrective actions with a continual quality improvement focus
  • Maintain structured workplace health and safety governance processes, including regular Committee meetings in line with the agreed terms of reference.
  • Lead workers compensation, rehabilitation and return-to-work processes, ensuring timely, supportive and legislatively compliant case management and employee recovery processes.
  • Coordinate and deliver Workplace Health and Safety training programs, including staff inductions and targeted training where required.
  • Effectively gather and analyse safety data, identifying trends to ensure evidence-based decision making, providing regular progress reports, and sound recommendations to management.
  • Gather and record statistical data relevant to measuring performance against agreed indicators and participate in review and evaluation activities.
  • Participate in organisational and community activities to advance the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Work within Wuchopperen’s Policies and Procedures including the Staff Code of Conduct and the Work Health and Safety requirements and contribute to continuous improvement processes to ensure compliance with relevant standards and safe, effective service delivery.

Core Capabilities:

For applicants to be successful in this role, they should demonstrate:

  • A tertiary qualification in Workplace Health and Safety is essential, together with injury management experience in a similar role. A Certificate in Workplace Rehabilitation and Return to Work, along with Cert IV in Workplace Training and Assessment is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies and cultures from an historical and contemporary perspective, including the ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Provability to interpret and apply Work Health & Safety and workers compensation legislation, standards, and guidelines, as well as experience managing rehabilitation and return-to-work processes.
  • Experience in project management, ideally within a health or community services environment along with experience developing, implementing and maintaining legislatively compliant Work Health and Safety systems, policies and procedures.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to work independently and in in a multi-disciplinary team environment, influencing positive safety practises, whilst dealing with matters of a sensitive and confidential nature.
  • Extensively developed interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to liaise with a range of stakeholders as well as effectively advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet and work within the core values and behaviours of Wuchopperen.

Qualifications and experience:

A tertiary qualification in Workplace Health and Safety is essential, together with injury management experience in a similar role. A Certificate in Workplace Rehabilitation and Return to Work, along with Cert IV in Workplace Training and Assessment is highly desirable.

Requirements:

  • Hold a current Blue Card (for suitability to work with children and young people).
  • Proof of qualifications is required to be provided prior to the commencement of duty.
  • Possess a current driver’s licence.
  • A commitment to adhere to Wuchopperen’s policies and procedures.
