Your new company
Hays are pleased to partner with a government department dedicated to moving and connecting people, places, goods, and services – safely, efficiently, and effectively. They currently require a high-performing and innovative Compliance Officer to join their team part-time (2 set days each week) for a temporary contract with possible extension, based in Cairns.
Your new role
Working within Queensland’s Far Northern Biosecurity Initiative Team, you will be responsible for providing compliance activities. A significant part of the role will involve the inspection of freight, freight yards and vessels for biosecurity risks which may impact the receiving communities in the Torres Strait, and auditing mitigation strategies to reduce these biosecurity risks.
You will also be responsible for:

  • Contribute to the development, implementation and review of strategies, plans and procedures for undertaking a range of compliance, investigative and enforcement activities.
  • Conduct compliance monitoring inspections of sea freight, freight storage facilities and vessels in the Cairns port area which are destined for the Torres Strait or Northern Peninsula Area to ensure compliance.
  • Provide on-the-job training of local government officers in inspection techniques.
  • Work with freight companies to develop mitigation measures to reduce any potential biosecurity risk movement.
  • Regularly audit freight companies to ensure risk mitigation measures (for example trapping, baiting and biosecurity declarations) are being effectively implemented.
  • Keep accurate records of the results of compliance inspections and any evidence gathered.
  • Recommend, initiate and manage appropriate enforcement action.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships as part of a team with senior management, colleagues and regional stakeholders in order to meet expectations.
  • What you'll need to succeed
As the successful candidate, you will be highly organised, have excellent written and verbal communication with strong attention to detail and have a motivated, positive outlook with a compassionate attitude. A strong administration background and experience in compliance or auditing roles would be well regarded.
    What you'll get in return
In return, you will gain a 6-month part-time (2 set days a week) temporary contract working on high-profile government projects in Far North Queensland and further develop your skills in the communications field. You will receive an attractive hourly rate and enjoy a convenient location in Cairns. You will work in a well-established, friendly and supportive team. Full training will be provided.
