Centacare North Queensland is a not-for-profit organisation delivering counselling, family support, disability services, youth programs, crisis housing, education and community services across North Queensland, including Townsville, Ayr, Bowen, Mount Isa, Cloncurry and Normanton.

We are seeking a Family Support Officer to join our BRDIGE Program in Mount Isa — a secondary family support service focused on early intervention, strengthening family functioning, and reducing risk to children and young people.

About the role

Working under the guidance of a Senior Practitioner, you will support families experiencing vulnerability by providing practical, culturally responsive early intervention strategies that build resilience, safety, and capacity within the home.

You’ll work collaboratively with families and community stakeholders to prevent issues from escalating and to support positive, sustainable change.

Skills and Experiences:
What you'll be doing

In this role, you will:
Build strong, respectful relationships with families while maintaining professional boundaries

Support family assessments through engagement, observation, and tools such as Family Star

Provide practical strategies to strengthen parenting capacity and promote safe, positive family environments

Assist with parenting education groups and workshops

Deliver culturally appropriate support to diverse families, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and CALD communities

Maintain accurate client files, case notes, and documentation in line with policy and program requirements

Collaborate with government and non-government services to support families holistically

Identify and escalate safety concerns in line with organisational policy

Participate in supervision, team meetings, professional development, and service planning

What you'll bring

Essential:
Certificate IV or higher in Community Services (or similar)

Experience working with vulnerable families in a strengths-based, non-judgemental way

Strong communication skills (written and verbal)

Understanding of family functioning across diverse cultural and social contexts

Demonstrated experience or capability in conducting safety and risk assessments

Well-developed organisational and administrative skills

Current open driver licence

Current (or ability to obtain) Blue Card and NDIS Worker Screening / Yellow Card

Desirable:
Experience in community services, not-for-profit, or faith-based settings

Experience or interest in group work or community education
