About the
Role

We’re
seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Design Engineer to
lead the delivery of high-quality civil infrastructure projects
for Townsville City Council. In this pivotal
role, you will provide technical supervision and guidance to
the design team, ensuring timely completion of designs,
drawings, schedules, consultation graphics, and cost estimates
that meet industry best practices.

You
will take responsibility for RPEQ sign-off and champion the
Safety in Design process, while applying strong leadership
skills to mentor, manage performance, and foster a
high-performance culture aligned with Council values. This
position also involves developing and maintaining design
standards, specifications, and policies in compliance with
legislative requirements, managing project costings, and
collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver
integrated infrastructure solutions. Additionally, you will
oversee external consultants, review proposed designs, and
provide expert technical advice to ensure optimal outcomes for
our community.

About
You

Our ideal candidate
will have:

  • Degree in Civil
    Engineering and RPEQ (or obtained within 12 months of
    appointment); coupled with extensive experience in design,
    maintenance and operation of Transport, Traffic and Civil
    infrastructure. Post graduate qualifications would be highly
    regarded.
  • Extensive
    leadership skill and experience in leading a team and
    motivating others to succeed.
  • Comprehensive
    knowledge of design principles, guidelines, relevant
    documentation, environmental legislation and their application
    to the design and planning of civil infrastructure
    projects.
  • Arbitration,
    negotiation and interpersonal skills, to enable the effective
    communication of acceptable and suitable outcomes with
    stakeholders along with an advanced standard of written
    communication.
  • Advanced time
    management, problem solving skills and an awareness of project
    management methods, procurement processes and contracting
    principles.
  • Understanding
    of pavement design, suitability of materials (including
    recycled content) and construction practices so that the design
    accounts for the provision of environmentally sustainable, cost
    effective and quality civil assets with a suitable life
    expectancy.
  • Extensive
    knowledge of computer operations, software and database
    applications (e.g. 12D, AutoCad, Microsoft Office
    suite)
  • Current
    “C” class driver’s licence.
