Project and Policy Officer – Aboriginal Targeted - NSW Trustee and Guardian
1 x Ongoing full-time vacancy and 1 x Temporary full-time vacancy of up to 18 months. 35 hours per week.Location: Multiple from the following: Sydney CBD, Parramatta, Wollongong, Gosford or NewcastleFlexible and hybrid working options available.Clerk Grade: Level 7/8. About The Team
The NSW Public Guardian can be appointed by a court or tribunal to make health and lifestyle decisions for people who are unable to make decisions on their own, or with support. These decisions may relate to where a person lives, their medical or dental treatment, health care, and access to services. The Public Guardian also supports private and enduring guardians, service providers, and the community with information and guidance.
The Public Guardian works with a range of stakeholders, including healthcare providers, legal professionals, community organisations, and families, to ensure the rights and wellbeing of vulnerable people are protected.
The NSW Public Guardian Has Four Main Units
Practice and Strategy: Leads advocacy, policy work, and engagement.Service Delivery: Provides guardianship services across NSW.Establishment and Quality Assurance: Manages intake, triage, and education for new matters.Legal: Provides legal advice and supports decision‑making.
The organisation is modernising its work through new learning models, governance improvements, updated technology, enhanced training, and preparation for future reforms, including Supported Decision Making.
About The Role
The Policy and Project Officer plays a key role in the Practice and Strategy team, supporting the Public Guardian through developing policies, procedures, and resources that strengthen guardianship practice. Working closely with the Assistant Public Guardian (Practice and Strategy) and the Practice Manager, the Project and Policy Officer creates and updates policies, guidelines, and training materials, ensuring our workforce is equipped with contemporary, best‑practice approaches.
The role also contributes to projects by preparing briefs, reports, and supporting systemic advocacy initiatives that improve outcomes for the people we serve.

About You
Experience in policy development including generating well‑designed policies and initiatives that support organisational goals and best practice.Highly organised and able to deliver on competing demands and deadlines.Ability to understand intersecting service systems and work with key stakeholders to identify and address policy gaps.Demonstrated understanding of adult learning principles and effective strategies for embedding policies and procedures into practice.Possess superior communication and analysis skills and hold a strong commitment to upholding the rights of people with disability that will be reflected in your work. Experience in project management, research and preparation of reports and advice.Has key knowledge of legislation and policy relevant to the Department, government and our agency functions.
