About Us

Sharehouse Youth Programs Inc. has been helping young people (16 to 25yrs) in Townsville navigate the road to independence since 1979.  By providing various accommodation options, programs, case management, support and advocacy, we aim to reduce the number of at-risk young people in the region. This includes accompanying children with accommodation, case management, mobile support, connection, and referral to other specialist services. 

About the Role

Reporting to the Team Leader, Sharehouse is looking for a passionate Youth Worker to join the team on a part-time basis (30.4 hours per week) with a rotating weekend and on-call roster. The team operates 7 days a week to provide support to young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. 

On a day-to-day basis you will be expected to:

  • Assist young people to maintain their housing or find long-term sustainable housing.

  • Actively engage clients in flexible, ongoing case management and support following their individualized case plans and goals.

  • Complete intake assessments of young people looking for accommodation and specialised supports.

  • Provide appropriate crisis support, information and advocacy to young people in our crisis and medium term supported accommodation services to access a range of services to address their health & well-being, welfare, housing, legal, income, educational, training and employment needs.

  • Work with the broader team to deliver various programs and activities to increase independence and self-reliance.

  • Develop and maintain a positive working relationship and referral network with local real estates, social housing, other accommodation providers and community organisations.

  • Respect for cultural differences and the ability to work sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

  • The ability to stay calm and respond quickly in crisis situations.

  • Strong communication skills to connect with young people, families, co-workers, and community services.

  • The ability to build trust and provide person-centred support that helps young people overcome challenges and achieve their own goals.

  • Good admin skills and time management, keeping accurate case notes, assessments, computer date records, and writing reports.

Essential Requirements:

  • Queensland Working with Children Check issued by the Queensland Government’s Blue Card Services.

  • A satisfactory Police Check.

  • A current open driver's license.

  • Current First Aid certificate including CPR (or willing to obtain one).

  • Suitable availability to work a minimum of 60.8 hours per fortnight, and be willing and able to work a roster that will include weekend shifts and on-call.  

Desired:

  • Certificate 4 Qualification in Youth Work, Community Services or related field, or substantial experience in the sector.

  • Lived experience is valued and would be highly regarded.

  • Additional training in the areas of Family and Domestic Violence, Trauma Informed Care, Alcohol and Other Drugs First Aid, Youth Mental First Aid and Cultural Awareness is desired.
